Life Lessons From India’s Best
I was in Bollywood mode today and came across an inspiring video from my ultimate favourite actor and India’s lifetime hero (apart from Ghandi) Dr. Shah Ruk Khan, who gave a speech at The University of Edinburgh. Shah Rukh Khan is a prolific face in India having featured in over 80 films, making him the second richest actor in the world. Not only that but he owns 2 productions companies, a cricket team and founded a charity to stop violence towards women. SO. I was really engaged with what he had to say about life and success and to be honest with you these are things that have really stuck with me and so I’m sharing them with you. I’ll post the video at the bottom too if you want to watch it, but I’ve summerised it into 11 lessons here 🙂
Through the titles of some of his films in Hindi, here are the translations and the lessons:
- Diwaana = Madness
Madness of the romantic type is a prerequisite of happiness. All of the most creative people of the world embraced their own idiosyncrasies. Normal is just another word for lifeless.
2. Chamka = Miracle
If you ever find yourself cheated, do not fear a miracle is near. No matter how bad it gets, life is the miracle you’re searching for. Use every resource you’ve been given, honour your life by not laying it to waste. There is no measurement of success in this world apart from making good with what life endows upon you.
3. Darr – Fear
Being brave means being shit scared all the way to the party. Don’t let your fears become boxes that you enclose yourself in. If you live by your fears, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Not to know what or where you want to be 20 years from now is normal.
4. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa – Confusion
It’s OK to be confused. Confusion is the root to all clarity. Don’t take yourself to seriously. Our values are our values, they don’t make you better then anyone else, at the very best, just different.
5. Ghuddo – A desire to help and serve others in a humanitarian way
Give yourself to others and realise you’re not doing them any favours by being kind to them. An act of goodness, become worthless when you assign a brownie point to yourself. Don’t underestimate the grace that other people bestow on you by just being a recipient of your kindness.
6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai– Things just happen
When life hits you with all the force of its rage, a Rolls Royce isn’t going to help you, grace will. If you feel like you’ve lost control, don’t panic…everything evolves as you go along, even disasters eventually resolve themselves. Give life the space to move at its own pace only by being kind to yourself when you are hurting. You don’t always have to figure things out for the circumstances you are in, sometimes it just happens.
7. Ram Jaane – God Knows
All the names you give yourself or those that others give you are just labels. You are not defined by them no matter how flattering or unflattering they are. What defines you is your heart. If you don’t have the fire in your belly to do something then don’t do it, it’s a waste of your time and others. Redefine yourself if you have to on your own terms and just get on with it. Don’t forget where you came from and who you really are, it ought to be the compass to navigate you through life.
8. Chak De – Let’s go
Whatever it is that is pulling you back it is not going to stop unless you use all your force and pull it with all your might the other way. Stop whining and keep moving.
9. Khabhi Khushi Khabhi Gham – Sometimes happiness, sometimes sadness
Sadness and happiness have the same quality of transience. Life is an exchange of one or the other. Don’t attach yourself to either emotion, they are both going to change consistently. Manage them with good humour. To be sometimes sad and sometimes happy is the very beauty of a life lived in full measure.
10. Dil se – Live from the heart
Love. Love people, love the mountains, love your work, love your enemies, most importantly love yourself. Let your heart be as deep as the deepest ocean and as wide as the widest horizon. It is the only excuse you can use to call yourself special. And if someone lets you down, don’t blame them for not trusting him/her but blame yourself for not trusting your love enough to forgive their trespasses.
11. Kal Ho Na Ho – You never know what the future will bring
Live as hard as you can in the very moment. Now is as much time as you will ever get. Your now is important, don’t be bound by rules, don’t hurt anybody and never ever live somebody else’s dreams. No matter how many times you fail and are in despair in the end everything will be alright. If it’s not alright – it’s not to be.
Through everything there is a lesson and I think that is the beauty of life, to be constantly evolving and learning to live the most passionate life we can. I absolutely love these ‘life lessons’ that we can take from the east and apply to the west. They’re so real and relevant (even though they’re from the movies)!
